Faith's Monumental Visit to South Dakota

When I received my niece, Sydnee's graduation announcement in the mail, I thought it might be the perfect opportunity to visit my brother and his family for the first time at their home in Spearfish. I also thought it would be the perfect opportunity to see Mount Rushmore, which I had never seen before!  My nephew in Nebraska was graduating that same weekend, and my sister Dawn and I tried to put together a plan where we could go to both of their graduation receptions. I knew though, that Faith would feel left out and would want to go, too. I also knew it was going to be difficult to find someone to look after Faith over Memorial Day weekend.  Our finalized plan involved Dawn traveling to South Dakota with me and Faith and then her flying to Nebraska by herself. Fun with Family

I loved the shocked look on my friend's face on the 4th of July when upon asking, "So did just your dad come down for the 4th?" And I told her, "My parents live in Bismarck now." In March of this year, my dad officially retired from the oilfield after 35 years, most of those years spent driving an 18-wheeler.

Shortly after his retirement, they officially became residents of Bismarck. In fact, their home is just down the road from my younger brother's place. They still have their land and their home in Watford City though so whenever my dad starts missing home, he can always go back to visit! They were blessed to have met some great people to rent their home out to who moved here from California to work in the Bakken.

Besides my parents moving here, my youngest sister also moved here from New Town. So now with the exception of an older brother in Montana and a sister in Nebraska, my whole family lives in Bismarck!

This past week, my sister came up from Nebraska and my sister-in-law came out from Montana. My parents had a family get-together at their home this past weekend where I had a great time visiting with siblings, in-laws, and aunts. I didn't see too much of the kids as the youngest four spent most of the time outside and the older ones hung out in the basement.

Unfortunately, Faith wasn't up to seeing everyone at once, so she and daddy stayed home from the get-together. I found it worked better to just have people come over to our place in smaller groups and to visit with Faith as we sat downstairs on the patio of our apartment complex.

This is our new nightly summer tradition - I come home, we have supper, watch Wheel of Fortune and then gather all of our stuff to spend the rest of the evening outside on the patio. It is practically dark outside before she wants to come back inside! I love this new tradition as it is so relaxing for me after a stressful day at work.

All in all, Faith is having a great summer, and we look forward to spending more time with family now that most of them live so close by!

Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month: Reflecting On Our Journey So Far

Did you know there are 1 million people in the United States who have cerebral palsy? I guess that means Faith truly is one in a million!  Faith was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was six months old. Prior to that, she had been given the diagnosis of Periventricular Leukomalacia  (PVL). During her premature birth, there was a lack of oxygen to her brain, which resulted in damage to the white matter, or inner part of her brain.  I will never forget receiving that news. Faith's Dad and I were told that nobody knew what the long-term effects of PVL would look like for her. All I could do was stare at my tiny daughter lying in her isolette, hooked up to all kinds of tubes and lines, and choose to believe she would be okay.  Faith in the NICU a few days after she was born. When season 41 began, I told her, "This is Pat's last season. Next year, there will be a new host."  Faith likes Vanna but loves Pat!  Faith and I have faithfully watched Wheel of Fortune every night since she was about 5 years old. It's how she learned that AEIOU were vowels. The show was also a great way to reinforce the rest of the alphabet. Counting was reinforced, too.
