Faith's Adaptive Skiing Adventure

I am usually all for Faith trying something new. Years ago, though, I drew the line at adaptive skiing. I knew that Dreams in Motion does an annual event at Huff Hills (North Dakota's largest ski area), but I was too afraid to let Faith try it. I just didn't know how she would do being strapped down so tightly, especially with her high tone and issues with her left hip.  At her day program, some of her friends had been going for years and Faith thought it sounded like so much fun. So, this year, I decided we should give it a try. Since there are only 20 spots available for this event, I got her registered the morning it opened up.  Lots of fresh powder at Huff Hills  As the event drew near, I knew I needed to get snow pants for her (since she had none) and make sure I had all the right winter apparel to keep her warm. Forget Spring, It's Summer!

I think North Dakota forgot all about spring this year and just went right into summer. It seriously seemed like one day the ground was still brown, the trees still bare and there wasn't a robin in sight and the next day was the exact opposite. While everyone was certainly getting tired of old man winter, we weren't ready for 90 degrees!

Besides feeling like summer, I am thankful that it really is summer vacation, and that Faith is done with school this year! She did so well the first half of fourth grade and somewhere along the way around Christmas vacation she began to struggle. We chalked it up to her high muscle tone protesting the frigid temperatures.

When it started warming up a little, though there were days she still struggled to get to school. In February she came down with a sinus infection and then in May the kids were getting a little more rambunctious than usual, so it was harder for her to be around them.

Her last day of school was supposed to be Thursday, May 22nd but due to a snow day in April, the year got extended one more day. On Thursday, she didn't seem to feel well and was protesting going to school but we sent her anyway. 

That night she came down with a fever of 100.7 degrees and had a very sleepless night. She wanted to go to school on her last day because they were going to the park. Right after watching Wheel of Fortune, she said, "Maybe if I go to bed early, I'll wake up and feel all better."

The next morning she still had a pretty high temperature but she still wanted to go to school. When we told her she couldn't go, she started crying. It was pretty sad. I felt bad all day about her missing her last day. We have since gotten over it though and she is very much enjoying her first week of summer vacation!

    OH! Sweet little girl who looks to be growing up so fast! I hope we can arrange to see her this summer. It is so busy around here with Scott's wedding in two weeks. We have a mountain of things to accomplish before then.
    This past winter was hard on most everybody the cold was so pentetrating. I know of at least three families leavingthe state because of it. We may not get another one like that in a long time again.
    Faith's radient smile is so warming I hope and pray she keeps that radience through the tough times.
    Blessings to you Cari I am not sure when I will be coming to Bismarck again probably not for awhile now. I shouold come and stay with Paula some weekend but right now the whole month of June is booked and half of July!! Oh then we have a big reception for Scott and Beth in Aug so there goes most of the summer!!
    I am looking forward to slow lazy days whenever they come!
    May He keep you all smiling more and crying less and feeling less pain as the sun shines ever higher in the sky each day!

    Thanks Betty for your wonderful comment! I pray you get everything done in time for Scott's wedding and that it will truly be a blessed event! I do look forward to you meeting Faith one day when things slow down!

An Unforgettable February!

February started out as it typically does: very cold! This year, my parents and sister braved the weather to have a small get together for my birthday. Faith thought I needed another party like I had last year, but I told her 51 just wasn't as exciting! Adults Living with Congenital Heart Defects (CHD)

We are right in the middle of Congenital Hearts Defect (CHD) Awareness Week, which runs from February 7th through 14th. I am glad to see so many posts on social media to help draw awareness! Many of those posts center around children with CHD, which is good as heart defects are the most common birth defect in the United States. But many people are unaware of how CHD affects adults. Hence, this blog post!  In 2010, there were 1.4 million adults in the United States living with congenital heart defects (CHD). Due to increased survival, this number increases by about 5% every year. These numbers are significant considering that at one time babies born with CHD had virtually no chance of becoming an adult. Thanks to surgical advances and research in pediatric cardiology in the past 50 years, most congenital heart defects have been able to be corrected. Faith's 4 Year Day Program Anniversary

This past week marked a huge milestone in Faith's life - she has been at her day program for 4 years! I well remember how excited I felt when I found out that in order to qualify for the program, all she needed was to be 18 and have a high school diploma.  I know that is not the case in some states. And in many cases, parents choose to have their special needs child in school until they are 21 and then after that they can attend a day program. For Faith though, since I homeschooled her, we were both ready for her to move on to her adult life when she turned 18!  Faith at the Science Center with one of her day program staff  After a few meetings with her case manager and day program staff, she was ready for her first day.
